Challenge

Passive HDMI 2.1 runs longer than roughly 2 m eye-failed at 48 Gbps on standard 28 AWG TMDS pairs, and TMDS pair skew was closing the eye before the link could lock.

Solution

Reviewed the routing length against the 48 Gbps passive budget, cut the four TMDS pairs on synchronized dual-end cutters to control skew, and characterized each first article on a high-speed sampling oscilloscope at the spec data rate.

Result

The cable negotiated 4K 120Hz reliably within the passive length budget, with eye-diagram evidence captured per first article before the lot was released.

Flagged the length-versus-data-rate conflict at quote, and proposed an active cable with redriver IC for the longer run so the link could carry 48 Gbps over the required distance.

Result

The drawing was corrected to an active assembly for the long run, avoiding a field-level negotiation failure at 4K 120Hz.
